Orthodontics for Children and Teens

The American and Canadian Associations of Orthodontists recommend children have an initial orthodontic assessment at age seven. Early diagnosis of simple problems and resulting interceptive care may lessen or eliminate the need for future orthodontic treatment. This may include crossbites, finger habits (thumb sucking) and overbites. These problems are easier to treat in children.

Self-esteem may be an issue, especially with an overbite. In the event of a fall, there is also a high risk of injury to the front teeth if the child has an overbite. Many overbite problems are assessed for treatment in mixed dentition – where there are some baby teeth and permanent teeth.

In other words, having your child assessed by age seven can save money as well as time in future treatment.

The important thing is that the patient's orthodontic problem is identified, so that parents understand the extent of the problem, even if the patient is simply put on observation. This way the patient can be monitored for the correct and best timing of treatment, even if the particular problem is best treated only when permanent teeth have erupted.

Dr. Bianco's Port Coquitlam orthodontic office also makes specialty, custom sports mouthguards to help protect children's teeth while they're playing sports, whether they have braces or not.

Orthodontics for Adults

Adults have access to many different orthodontic treatment options. There are solutions to problems at any age, even though adults do not have growth to help achieve their goals. Some people see the benefits of not only tooth alignment, but also a healthy, long lasting bite, harmonious with the jaw joint. Each case requires a thorough assessment prior to considering the treatment option that is best for them.

There is a marked increase in adults seeking help to correct their bite with orthodontics. Crooked teeth are hard to clean and maintain, which can lead to tooth decay, gum disease, and sometimes tooth loss, as well as stress on jaw joints and the bone that supports teeth. Some people experience headaches, face or neck pain. All people want to experience the self-esteem boost a great smile brings to their lives.

We also have a sports mouthguard program, where we make specialty, custom mouthguards to protect teeth while playing sports, whether the person is in braces or not.
